Welcome to SCCF Coastal Watch's second year of Marsh Madness. Last year, over 100 dedicated volunteers came together to plant over 8,000 spartina and saw grasses on SCCF preserves, and this year we aim to do even more to restore!
How can you get involved?
1. Volunteer! Join us on an upcoming planting at one of our marshland preserves.
2. Donate to purchase plants for the marshes. Show your support for our restoration efforts by participating in our Marsh Madness bracket competition.
- Check out our 8 'Marsh Mascots' and vote through donations each week on your favorite to be named the Marsh Madness Champion.
- Each dollar donated is a vote for your favorite Marsh Mascot! The funds raised will be used to purchase the plants needed to restore our damaged marsh habitats.
- Want to donate some cold, hard cash? Stop by Sanibel Sea School to put your dollar bills in your mascot’s jar!
- Both the online and cash donations will be tallied up at the end of the week to determine our winners that will be announced on Coastal Watch and SCCF social media! Be sure to show your support to keep your mascot in the game!
Why Are We Restoring Marsh Habitat?
Sanibel’s marsh habitat — also known as its interior wetlands — serves many purposes; high-productivity stormwater retention areas, filtering water of nutrients and salinity, and offering a rich habitat for wildlife before water seeps into the aquifer below the island.
These critical historic habitats were severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Ian and didn’t have enough time to restore themselves naturally before Hurricanes Helene and Milton came through last storm season. Our goal is to help give Mother Nature a head start in the restoration process and plant marsh grasses in areas where they are needed most.

The Marsh Mascot Champion will be announced Monday, March 24
The champion will be announced via Coastal Watch and SCCF's Instagram and Facebook pages. The champion gets the honor of being on this year's Marsh Madness shirt, which will be available for all planting volunteers for pickup during the month of April!
One supporter of the champion will be picked at random for a chance to win a Coastal Watch shirt and Coastal Watch hat.
