During winter, SCCF volunteers and plant experts lead weekly, educational Weeds ‘n’ Seeds plant walks on Sanibel and nearby off-island locations. All walks are on Monday mornings and last approximately two hours. Explore our plant resources and click on individual events below for details.

Upcoming Walks

Walks last from approximately 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mondays. No reservations or fees required. Participants are encouraged to wear proper footwear for walking through mud/water and vegetation, especially for the events marked with an *asterisk!

Feb. 23: Seasonal Wetland/Upland Yard

This Weeds ‘n’ Seeds will be held at 9 a.m. in the yard of Advanced Master Naturalist and Sanibel Vegetation Committee Chair Barbara Wyskowski. Wyskowski, a Florida-Friendly Landscaping professional, has filled her yard with native plant habitats, attracting an impressive cast of wildlife species.

Since parking in the driveway is limited, carpooling will take place from Sanctuary Golf Club at 2801 Wulfert Road, Sanibel, FL. Meet there in the staff parking lot (gravel, back right) at 8:45 a.m. Questions or can’t carpool? Please contact Ruth Brooks at 518-322-9996.

March 2: Bailey's Beach Park

This Weeds 'n' Seeds will be held at 9 a.m. at Bailey's Beach Park, which is located at the end of Bailey Road (985 Bay Shore Drive, Sanibel, FL). Park free with a ‘Resident A Parking Sticker’ or ‘Non-residential B permit.' Bike parking is also free.

*March 9: Wulfert Tract

Weeds 'n' Seeds is very excited to have permission to explore the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wulfert Tract for the first time this year. This interesting section of the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge has some interesting plants and animals that we don’t often see on our walks. The path here is VERY rough, please wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

Meet us at 9 a.m. at the corner of Wulfert Road and Sanctuary Road, where we will give out parking permits to park on Wulfert Road. Please carpool where possible or ride bikes.

March 16: Frannie's Preserve

Join us for one of our favorite Weeds n’ Seeds plant walks of the season at SCCF's Frannie's Preserve, typically not open to the public. It is located at 520 Tarpon Bay Road, Sanibel, FL. Park at the beach parking on Tarpon Bay Road with a City of Sanibel A pass, or pay to park ($5 an hour). Bike parking is free!

March 23: Oak Hammock

We are excited to have special permission from J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge to visit Oak Hammock — one of our favorite sites of the season. The American Legion has given us permission to park on the west side of their parking lot at 4249 Sanibel Captiva Rd.

We will explore this old home site and the interesting species that now call this "Oak Hammock” home. The entrance trail is now very dry, making walking easier than in past years. But you should expect rough walking and lots of poison ivy. A walking stick is recommended.

March 30: Periwinkle Preserve

For the last Weeds 'n’ Seeds walk of the season, we will return to SCCF's Periwinkle Preserve. This seven-acre preserve is accessible on foot or by bike west of Casa Ybel and east of Martha’s Lane on Periwinkle Way. We have permission to park at the Sanibel Community Church on the west side of their lot (1740 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel). We will meet at the west end of the parking lot at 8:50 a.m. and walk to the preserve.

Since the removal of Australian pines following Hurricane Charley (2004), thousands of native trees and shrubs have been planted. We can now see what Hurricane Ian has done and which plants have been the most resilient, with a little help, in this location.
