During winter, SCCF volunteers and plant experts lead weekly, educational Weeds ‘n’ Seeds plant walks on Sanibel and nearby off-island locations. All walks are on Monday mornings and last one to two hours. Explore our plant resources and click on individual events below for details.
Upcoming Walks
No reservations or fees required. Participants are encouraged to wear proper footwear for walking through mud/water and vegetation, especially for the events marked with an *asterisk!
March 24: J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, 9 a.m.
Weeds ''n' Seeds will meet at 9 a.m. on March 24 at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, at the "Roost" in front of the Visitors Center (1 Wildlife Drive, Sanibel, FL).
Please park in the ‘overflow parking,’ which is to the left as you enter the parking area, and free. We plan to walk down to the open section of the Indigo Trail to explore. This is our only opportunity to actually walk through a Mangrove forest, observing their response to the hurricanes of the last few years and noting how the estuary has been impacted.
March 31: Bailey's Beach Park, 9 a.m.
In our third attempt this season due to previous rain-outs — Weeds 'n' Seeds will explore Baileys Beach Park (985 Bayshore Lane, Sanibel) at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 31.
This narrow, bayside beach has significant damage as a result of the past hurricane season, but many of the native plants are recovering and growing. Cars with A/B stickers can park here. For cars without stickers, we will be offering car pooling from Tutti Pazzi (1200 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel) leaving at 8:50 a.m.
