Gopher Tortoise Habitat Maintenance Day
Join us for a hands-on “check-up” day at the project site that was the focus of our recent gopher tortoise habitat enhancement efforts this past winter and spring. These follow-up workdays are essential for helping SCCF staff maintain the progress made during the project season.
This restoration work centers on improving open, sandy upland (coastal scrub) habitat which are the conditions that gopher tortoises depend on for burrowing, nesting, and foraging. Volunteers will assist with key tasks such as removing invasive plant species and thinning dense vegetation, helping to restore the open landscape.
Your efforts directly support one of Florida’s most important keystone species. Gopher tortoise burrows provide shelter for more than 350 other species, making their habitat vital to the health of the entire ecosystem. By participating, you’re not only helping sustain a threatened species, but also contributing to the long-term resilience and biodiversity of Sanibel.
