Mind Your Line is seeking volunteers for an Island-wide monofilament cleanup on Saturday, June 7 from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. This community-driven event will help keep local waterways clean and safe for wildlife.

Volunteers will collect and properly dispose of discarded fishing line along mangrove shorelines, canals, and popular fishing areas on Sanibel and the Causeway Islands. The cleanup is being organized by Mind Your Line — a collaborative effort of SanCap conservation organizations.

Fishing line that’s left in the environment doesn’t biodegrade and can remain as a hazard for years. This cleanup helps prevent entanglement, pollution, and preserves the beauty and safety of our waters.

Some locations are by kayak only, please bring your own kayak if possible. Supplies including gloves, grabbers, and buckets will be provided. Sign up here.

Mind Your Line was established in 2014 by a group of Sanibel-Captiva conservation organizations in response to the observation of ongoing environmental problems and an increase in wildlife injuries caused by monofilament line and other fishing gear. Currently, participants include the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), and the City of Sanibel.
