Coastal Watch & MANG Volunteers Plant 1,000 Mangroves
SCCF’s Coastal Watch volunteers, alongside volunteers from MANG helped plant over 1,000 mangroves on SCCF’s York Island Preserve. The partnership and planting mark yet another milestone towards recovery from Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton.
York Island Preserve, nestled in the serene San Carlos Bay area, has been grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. The shoreline bore the brunt of the storm’s wrath, leaving behind a scarred landscape in desperate need of rejuvenation.
Coastal Watch volunteers planted over 200 red and black mangroves on the island in 2024 with MANG in an effort to restore the shoreline. Even after the effects of Hurricane Helene and Milton last season, some mangroves planted were still standing strong! Volunteers and staff furthered restoration efforts with this massive planting event.
Each plant was carefully placed in the intricate prop roots of the dead or existing mangroves to ensure it is shielded from the high winds and waves to grow. As we planted each seedling, we couldn’t help but envision the lush canopy that would one day envelop the island.
Throughout the planting process, MANG and SCCF staff provided guidance and educated volunteers about the benefits of mangroves on our coasts, underscoring the importance of community collaboration in conservation endeavors. Together, we are not just planting mangroves; we are inspiring hope for a greener, more resilient future.
