A HUGE thank you to On Island for hosting a “Sip & Slurp” fundraiser on Feb. 28 at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille on Sanibel. All proceeds from this event were donated to SCCF’s Coastal Watch program to help support oyster restoration in San Carlos Bay and Tarpon Bay.

The fundraiser included a silent auction, raffle, and, of course, oysters for guests to enjoy provided by Doc Ford’s. Guests got to make their mark on restoration efforts by decorating oyster shells that will be a part of Coastal Watch’s recycling program to repair oyster reefs.

Oyster reefs provide vital habitat to marine plants and filter the water around them. These estuarine habitats are in decline worldwide due to over-harvesting, coastal development, nutrient pollution, and disease.

SCCF’s Marine Laboratory and Coastal Watch program are working to study, protect, and restore Southwest Florida’s oyster populations.

“Events such as these help make oyster restoration possible,” said Coastal Watch Director Kealy Pfau. “Thank you so much to On Island and all guests who came out to support!”
