On Island Collaborates with SCCF to Rebuild Oyster Beds in Pine Island Sound
On Island is partnering with SCCF to support the rebuilding of oyster beds in Pine Island Sound. This initiative highlights the grit and determination needed to restore our vital marine ecosystems.
For every T-shirt purchased from On Island, one bucket of grit will be donated to aid in the restoration of the oyster beds. A bucket of “grit” is a bucket of recycled oyster shell that will be placed by volunteers on damaged reefs in Tarpon Bay. The goal is to add more substrate for oyster larvae to attach to and restore the reefs.
This innovative idea was inspired by co-owners Laura DeBruce and Kate Sergeant during a recent boat inspection with SCCF, where they witnessed the damage caused by storms and the urgent need for action.
They invite the community to join this important effort to help revitalize the oyster population in Pine Island Sound. Together, we can make a significant impact on our local environment.
