Volunteers Restore Vital Habitat at Bright Water Preserve
On Wednesday, Dec. 4, 12 Coastal Watch volunteers came together to clean up the Bright Water Preserve along West Gulf Drive, across from Island Inn. This smaller SCCF preserve, which faced significant damage during Hurricane Ian, once again suffered from the storm surge from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. A lot of debris, both small and large was scattered throughout the preserve.
The volunteers worked hard, walking along the bike path and navigating through the preserve to collect trash left behind by the hurricanes. Their efforts not only removed harmful debris but also helped create a healthier environment for local wildlife and native plants to thrive.
Coastal Watch Director Kealy Pfau shared her gratitude for the volunteers: “A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this cleanup! Despite the challenge of navigating tricky vegetation and ankle-deep muck, the volunteers rose to the occasion. While attempting to free myself from the muck, I noticed tracks from coyotes, raccoons, and other wildlife, a reminder of how these animals navigate this terrain daily. I’m sure they handled the conditions better than we did! This effort made a real impact, and every volunteer should feel a deep sense of accomplishment knowing they’ve helped protect this vital habitat.”Special thanks to Island Inn for allowing our volunteers to park in their lot for this event and for their continued support as a valued partner. Thanks to the dedication of these volunteers, Bright Water Preserve is one step closer to recovery, paving the way for a more resilient habitat. Stay tuned for future opportunities to join in on restoration efforts!
