Love Sanibel Back Beach Cleanup: A Powerful Day of Community and Conservation

Love Sanibel Back Beach Cleanup

This past Saturday, Nov. 2, over 200 dedicated volunteers joined SCCF’s Coastal Watch for a successful Love Sanibel Back Beach Cleanup, removing an impressive 1,220 pounds of debris from Sanibel and Captiva’s shores. Following the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, our islands’ beaches needed extra care, and we were blown away by the outpouring of community support to help restore our shores.

“Our community’s response to the Love Sanibel Back Beach Cleanup has been truly inspiring,” said Kealy Pfau, Coastal Watch Director. “After the recent hurricanes, it’s more important than ever for us to come together to protect and restore our coastlines. Each piece of debris removed not only makes our beaches safer for wildlife but also strengthens our community’s resilience. We’re so grateful to everyone who took the time to join us—it’s a reminder of the incredible impact we can make when we all work together.”

Why It Matters

Hurricane debris can create hazards for wildlife and disrupt the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. Cleaning the beaches not only helps protect sea turtles, shorebirds, and other marine life but also strengthens the resilience of Sanibel’s shoreline against future storms. Restoring our beaches and dunes reinforces these natural barriers, which are essential to minimizing erosion and flooding.

“Making sure the beach is clean is important all the time, not just after the hurricane. This is a beautiful place, it’s a beautiful island. Obviously, the parking lot is full so everyone loves coming here! You don’t want to come here and have debris or garbage or anything when you’re enjoying the beach,” said Eric Jackson, Public Information Officer for the City of Sanibel. Eric spent the morning cleaning up the beaches with his son Finn.

Thank You to Our Sponsors and Partners

We’re incredibly grateful for the amazing support from our sponsors and partners who made this cleanup possible. The City of Sanibel was an invaluable partner, and thanks to the sponsorship from Bank of the Islands, volunteers enjoyed a delicious lunch from Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille. Hooked Dumpsters provided vital trash disposal, and special thanks to Sanibel Moorings Resort and Island Inn for providing much-needed parking. This event wouldn’t have been a success without you!

Part of the Love Sanibel Weekend

Sanibel’s recovery isn’t just about cleaning up—it’s about coming together as a community. This cleanup was part of a whole weekend of showing Sanibel some love! On Sunday, Nov. 3, SCCF joined the Love Sanibel Community Gathering hosted by Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church to celebrate Sanibel’s nonprofits and the power of our united community.

Thank you to everyone who took part—your efforts are making a lasting impact!
