What is the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program?

Coastal Watch’s Adopt-A-Mangrove initiative encourages local community members to “adopt” mangroves and nurture them at their homes.

The process is simple:

  • You’ll receive a mangrove seedling, pots, and soil, along with all the guidance you need to take care of these vital coastal plants.
  • These baby trees will grow under your loving care until they reach a certain size, at which point SCCF will ask for you to return them.
  • Rest assured that your precious mangrove seedlings will be planted at one of SCCF’s many restoration sites, contributing to the preservation of our beloved coastal habitats.

Can Snowbirds Participate? Absolutely!

We welcome all members of our community, including seasonal residents, to become Mangrove Mamas and Propagule Papas. If you’re a snowbird heading north for the summer, you can still participate in this heartwarming initiative. Before you bid farewell to our beautiful coast, just return your mangrove babies to SCCF. These plants will be in the capable hands of our resident Mangrove Mamas who will lovingly care for the seedlings at our nursery. So, whether you’re a year-round or seasonal member of our community, you can make a lasting impact on the environment.

Why Should You Adopt a Mangrove?

The Adopt-A-Mangrove program is more than just an act of nurturing and caring for these incredible plants. It’s the beginning of a broader mission to restore our shorelines, provide essential natural infrastructure, and promote equilibrium for biodiversity. Mangroves are not only vital for the health of our coastal ecosystems but also play a crucial role in climate resilience and the future of our planet.
