Garden Center Offering Back to Basics Workshops

With all the interest in planting native, SCCF’s Native Landscapes & Garden Center is offering a new ‘Back to Basics’ series of gardening workshops.

The classes will be held in February and March at the Garden Center’s open-air pavilion. They will include a classroom portion as well as a hands-on demonstration. The instruction will be focused on native plants, but some of the principles apply to all types of plants. The cost is $10 per class.

Right Plant Right Place: Feb. 7, 1 – 3 p.m.

Learn how to determine the right plants for your garden, starting with assessing your garden goals, such as attracting pollinators, creating privacy barriers, and providing shade. We’ll also discuss the importance of understanding the soil type, light availability, and moisture of your space.

Basic Planting and Maintenance: Feb. 21, 1 – 3 p.m.

In this session, you’ll learn how to properly plant, water, and mulch. We’ll discuss understanding plant establishment timelines for newly planted plants and determine next care steps such as weeding, and establishing a watering schedule.

Pruning: March 13, 1 – 3 p.m.

Learn proper pruning techniques, what tools to use and why, and how to maintain tools.

Integrated Pest Management: March 20, 1 – 3 p.m.

Learn how to identify beneficial vs. harmful pests in your garden, and how to avoid systemic pesticides and opt for organic alternatives instead.
