A big thanks to the volunteers from Pulte Homes who helped SCCF start rebuilding the boardwalk at our Pick Preserve, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ian.

The team drilled post holes with an auger and laid bolting stringers and decking material. Their assistance nearly completed the boardwalk! In addition to physical labor, Pulte Homes’ generosity included a donation to SCCF, which will be used to aid ongoing hurricane restoration efforts.

SCCF’s 26-acre Pick Preserve, located on Sanibel-Captiva Road across from the Sanibel School, is part of a network of around 400 acres of conservation land managed by SCCF, the state of Florida, the City of Sanibel, and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

A boardwalk, nature trail, and a screened-in teaching shelter was installed in 2000, thanks to grants from the Sanibel-Captiva Community Foundation and Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program. The site has routinely served as a place of experiential learning for Sanibel School students from kindergarten to the eighth grade.

SCCF thanks Tom and Sue Pick for funding the initial acquisition of Pick Preserve in 1995, and to Sue Pick for generously supporting this boardwalk restoration.
