Sanibel Sea School Launches Mobile SEA Lab
Sanibel Sea School is excited to announce the launch of our SEA (Science Experiments & Activities) Lab—a mobile lab that teaches the joys of marine science on-the-go! The goal of this new program is to expose students to marine science and technology, independent of their location. This mobile lab is equipped with microscopes, a smart TV, touch tank, and a variety of lab equipment for fun, hands-on experiments for all ages.
SEA Lab will help facilitate education in two ways—outdoor education in the field and on-the-go, hands-on education at schools, libraries, and community centers—and there’s no limit to where it can go. This summer, SEA Lab will be visiting eight libraries in Lee and Collier counties. The first of these library visits was in June at the Sanibel Public Library, where 30 kids participated in our squid dissection, plankton, and “creature feature” labs.
The beach-side use of the lab will allow students to dip their toes in the ocean, smell the stinky fish, taste the salty air, then step into a science laboratory. The SEA Lab’s first beach-side outing will be later this month when it journeys to Key Largo with the campers participating in Sanibel Sea School’s two sessions of Coral Reef Week. The teen camp features 15 campers per session who will be conducting experiments in the mobile lab utilizing all of the new lab equipment.
Sanibel Sea School’s outreach program is looking forward to bringing the SEA Lab to community partners and schools in the fall. Keep an eye out for our SEA Lab on-the-go and rolling down the road! For more information email sanibelseaschool@sccf.org.
