PRINCIPAL DUTIES
- Perform landscape maintenance around SCCF’s six facilities and six publicly accessible preserves — including weeding, mowing, edging, weed-whacking, trimming, and general upkeep of the landscape and natural areas.
- Spread landscape materials (i.e., mulch, shell, gravel).
- Assist Native Landscapes & Garden Center staff with new plantings around SCCF facilities and trails.
- Recognize Florida native plant species and their seedlings, and leave/remove as appropriate.
- Trim shrubs and small trees in accordance with best horticultural practices.
- Interact with the public as needed, representing SCCF in a professional and courteous manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to use various landscaping power tools, including string trimmer, mower, blower, etc.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in subtropical conditions for long periods of time, including hot temperatures, humidity, insects, and in areas with high concentrations of poison ivy.
- Ability to communicate well in English.
- Possession of or willingness to obtain Florida Pesticide licensing.
- Ability to tow and maneuver a trailer.
- Valid driver’s license.
- 18 years of age or older.

SCCF's Native Landscapes & Garden Center seeks an energetic and hardworking intern to assist in day-to-day garden and nursery operations and work with our landscape installation services. This internship lasts 6 months.
The Native Landscapes & Garden Center offers a unique working environment as a nonprofit retail nursery dedicated to landscaping for the improvement of native habitat and wildlife on and around Sanibel and Captiva Islands. This intern will have the opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge about South Florida native plants and gain firsthand experience in all aspects of an environmentally friendly garden, nursery, and landscaping business.
INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
- Retail nursery operation and plant care (watering, potting, pruning, weeding, landscape installation, and customer service)
- Work closely with our gardener to assist in the upkeep of 2 acres of demonstration gardens surrounding the Garden Center
REQUIREMENTS
- A strong interest in plants and conservation
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a related field is preferred
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Prepared to work outdoors in subtropical conditions, including hot temperatures, humidity, and insects
- Valid U.S. driver’s license

Stipend: $480/week
The SCCF Marine Laboratory is seeking a full-time Research Associate.
This position will direct day-to-day operations of lab projects and programs including research and monitoring of local estuarine habitats; pursue research interests related to habitat functions, fish and invertebrates, and water quality; lead grant proposals and field sampling efforts; and more. Applicants should have a minimum M.S., 2+ years of experience in a related field, prior experience with boats and field work, and be a certified SCUBA diver.
The SCCF Marine Lab is a member of the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories and Florida Institute of Oceanography, with six resident staff. We are also committed to a diverse workplace and strongly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in marine and environmental sciences.
Salary: $50K, plus health insurance, 401K with match, and generous paid vacation/sick leave/holidays.
