On March 11, Sanibel Sea School held its final guided beach walk of the spring season in partnership with Road Scholar, closing out another memorable chapter of experiential learning along the shores of Sanibel Island.

So far in 2026, marine science educators have led five walks for Road Scholar participants, with two more scheduled for December. These programs are part of a six-day educational excursion that brings adult learners from around the world to explore the natural wonders of Southwest Florida.

On these immersive walks, the beach becomes a living classroom. Educators guide the group through the fascinating formation of barrier islands, point out local wildlife, and dive into the rich world of shells that makes Sanibel famous. Along the way, the ever-changing wrack line offers new discoveries, everything from crab molts to snail egg cases, allowing each walk to be tailored to the group’s interests and questions.

For many participants, the experience is a highlight of their trip.

“Just walking the beautiful beach collecting seashells was a joy!” one guest shared. Others praised the educators’ enthusiasm and expertise, noting that the walks were engaging and informative. “I thought I would be bored with learning about shells,” another participant admitted, “but I found the program to be very interesting. Now I have new knowledge of something I have underappreciated.”

The partnership reflects a shared commitment between Sanibel Sea School and Road Scholar to meaningful, experiential learning. As the world’s largest not-for-profit provider of educational travel experiences, Road Scholar has long inspired adults to explore, discover, and connect more deeply with the places they visit. Their programs emphasize not just seeing a destination, but truly experiencing it through expert-led instruction, hands-on activities, and opportunities for connection.

That mission aligns seamlessly with Sanibel Sea School’s own approach to marine science education.

“Thank you for a fabulous season yet again!” said Arielle Wildau, Program Operations East Manager at Road Scholar. “Our groups love their time with you — in fact, for many, it is the highlight! They leave with a totally new appreciation. And on my end, you have been so wonderful to work with. It is greatly appreciated.”

Looking ahead, the partnership shows no signs of slowing down. Road Scholar has already requested to continue the collaboration in 2027, with 10 walks currently on the books.

These walks offer a chance for visitors to slow down, engage their senses, and build a lasting connection with the coastal environment. Whether it’s uncovering the story behind a single shell or gaining a broader understanding of barrier island ecosystems, participants leave with a renewed appreciation for nature. As another season comes to a close, one thing remains clear: learning doesn’t stop with age, especially when your classroom is the beach.
