The SCCF Marine Laboratory has received a generous $5,000 contribution from the Sanibel FlyFishers to support the lab’s ongoing monitoring and research of water quality, seagrass, and oyster habitat health.
This work is conducted year-round from research vessels that are in the field several days each week. The gift will help replace an aging, nonfunctional GPS unit on the Marine Lab’s 26-foot Panga vessel, ensuring accurate navigation to sampling sites. Funding will also support the installation of a powerpole anchoring system, which allows researchers to hold position without traditional anchors, reducing disturbance to habitats.
“We really appreciate the funding that will help upgrade our research vessel and minimize our team’s impacts to seagrass,” said SCCF Marine Lab Director Eric Milbrandt, Ph.D.
