The Center Tract, located behind the SCCF Nature Center, is a restored cross-section of rare and unique interior, wetland and upland habitats. It is open to members (free) and visitors ($5/adult, children under 17 free) and includes 4 miles of nature trails, boardwalks, and an observation tower overlooking the Sanibel River. Guided trail walks are offered regularly throughout the year, but visitors may take self-guided tours.
Visitors can see interior wetlands and the Sanibel River - an unique freshwater feature rarely found on barrier islands - as well as a buckthorn grove with orchids and open grasslands, harcking back to Sanibels ancient landscapes. Depending on the season, wading birds such as roseatte spoonbills and tricolored herons can be found feeding in shallow pools. The wildlife and seasonal landscapes are constantly changing and a delight to experience throughout the year.
